Jennifer Lawrence shares raw experience with postpartum challenges
Jennifer Lawrence recalls her postpartum period in recent press conference
Jennifer Lawrence took a trip down memory lane as she candidly shared her struggles following the birth of her first child during a press conference for her new film, Die, My Love.
The Winter’s Bone actress, who garnered recognition for her performance in the 2010 thriller, recalled the emotional challenges she faced during the postpartum period after becoming a mother.
During the press event promoting her newly released project, Lawrence, 34, opened up about her role in Die, My Love.
Speaking exclusively, she said, “I mean, obviously, as a mother, it was really hard to separate what I would do as opposed to what she would do. It was just heartbreaking. When I first read the book, It was just such a devastating, powerful… Lynne (Ramsay) said it was dreamlike.”
The Hunger Games star elaborated further on her character in the horror-comedy film.
She continued, “I had just read my first (baby). And there’s not really anything like postpartum. It’s extremely isolating, which is so interesting when Lynne (Ramsay) moves this couple into Montana. She doesn’t have a community. She doesn’t have her people. But the truth is, extreme anxiety and extreme depression is isolated, no matter where you are. You feel like an alien. And so it deeply moved me. I wanted to work with Lynn Ramsey since I saw Rat Catcher.”
Later in the conference, the American actress described motherhood as both “brutal and incredible”.
Lawrence added, “Well, having children changes everything. It changes your whole life. But it’s brutal and incredible. And so not only do they go into every decision of if I’m working, where I’m working, when I’m working.”
Die, My Love, starring Jennifer as Grace and Robert Pattinson as her husband Jackson, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday, May 17.
Lawrence, who married Cooke Maroney in 2019, welcomed their first child in February 2022 and recently gave birth to their second child in March 2025.
