Miley Cyrus hits with another explosive update in Bruno Mars lawsuit

Miley Cyrus, chart-topping artist who earlier got into a legal battle with Bruno Mars for her hit Flowers, has just been hit with an unfortunate update in the lawsuit.

The case, which accused Miley of copying one of Bruno’s hit When I Was Your Man, is moving forward, and things may not be going in her favor.

The song shot straight to number one in no time, with many fans convinced that its emotional lyrics were a nod to her past heartbreak with ex-husband Liam Hemsworth, whom she parted ways with in 2020."

Flowers took home two big awards at the 2023 Grammys, Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance, but its victory was soon overshadowed by copyright claims.

Lyrics from the chorus of Bruno's number say: "I should have bought you flowers / and held your held / Should have give you all my hours / when I had the chance."

And Miley’s chorus is: "I can buy myself flowers / write my name in the sand / talk to myself for hours / say things you don't understand."

A judge ruled on Tuesday, March 18, that Miley Cyrus can't get the copyright lawsuit thrown out.

PEOPLE reports that the judge rejected Cyrus' legal argument, calling her team's understanding of 'exclusive' incorrect.

The order states: "Ownership of 'exclusive rights' is not to be conflated with 'exclusive ownership' of rights. The 'exclusive rights' are what is owned collectively by the co‐owners."

The order stated that co-writer Philip Lawrence had a shared ownership in the exclusive rights of the copyright. They added: "By transferring all of that interest, Tempo now steps into Lawrence’s shoes and is a co‐owner of the exclusive rights of the copyright.”
