Ariana Grande shares her deep connection with original ‘Wicked’ Broadway play
Ariana Grande talks about year long preparation for the role of Glinda in ‘Wicked’
Ariana Grande shared her profound connection with the original Broadway play.
In a recent Variety’s Award Circuit Podcast episode, the Thank U, Next crooner opened up about playing her childhood dream character, Glinda.
Reflecting on her first experience with the play, she said, “I saw Kristen [Chenoweth], and it was heaven. It’s surreal to think that I’m stepping into these shoes ones I’ve idolised since I was a kid. It’s the honour of my life.”
The 7 Rings singer revealed that to perform Glinda, emotional depth and character study was required which made her take acting lessons a year before she landed on the role.
“I wanted to make sure I was ready. Transforming my voice to sing Glinda’s soprano parts took months,” she said. “Pop singing and musical theatre are so different. I had to retrain my muscles and reframe how I approached every note.”
Discussing about the huge responsibility that came with the role, she said, “From the moment it was announced, I realised this role would live with me forever. It’s an honour, but it also comes with so much weight.”
The 31-year-old star further emphasised her dedication to the character, admitting that she wanted to do justice with the role and give her best to perform her as “she’s symbol of growth and love.”
Grande’s portrayal of Glinda marked a significant milestone in her career, earning her nominations in Golden Globes and National Board of Review Spotlight Awards.
