Selena Gomez, Nicole Kidman honoured at Women in Entertainment Gala
Selena Gomez shares heartfelt story about the impact of representation on young girls
Selena Gomez, Nicole Kidman and many other celebrities share powerful messages after receiving big acclaims.
The founder of Rare Beauty dedicated the victory to the voiceless when she accepted the Equity in Entertainment Award at The Hollywood Reporter’s Women in Entertainment Gala on Wednesday, December 4, at The Beverly Hills Hotel.
She shared her victory with "people who don't have voices and have been overlooked, pushed aside, and most importantly have been disrespected."
The former cast member of Wizards of Waverly Place also described a day when she was 15 and filming a "kid show" when a young mother approached her.
"She was with her daughter and she said, 'I'm so excited and happy. Thank you for being someone that looks like my daughter on TV because she can finally look up to someone like her,' " Gomez recalled.
Reflecting on her young age, the Who Says crooner said that “she was not thinking about the representation or what the gravity of those words meant," she was "very grateful" and "wanted to do my best to live up to that in whatever form that looked like."
"I believe that young girls need to see themselves reflected in diverse roles, heroes, leaders, and complex characters. When girls see women in empowered roles like I have, it inspires them to dream big and pursue their aspirations," said Gomez.
Moreover, Nicole Kidman, who costarred with her on the television show Big Little Lies, was given the prize by Laura Dern.
"One of the many other ways that Nicole demonstrates her exceptional leadership is in the way that she consistently shows up. Nicole is never not growing opportunities or building stories," Dern said. She "continues to teach me how to pave the way for inspiring and magical leadership."
The star-studded event welcomed Selena Gomez, Jennifer Lawrence, Kerry Washington, and many other at the gala event on Wednesday morning.
