Nicole Kidman debunks viral Tom Cruise divorce celebration meme
A snap of Nicole Kidman dancing with joy was interpreted as her celebrating her divorce with Tom Cruise in 2001
Nicole Kidman is setting the record straight about a decades-old meme tied to her ex-husband Tom Cruise.
In her British GQ Men of the Year cover story, published Monday, November 18, the Oscar-winning actress clarified that the iconic 2001 photo of her seemingly celebrating her divorce from Cruise has been misinterpreted for years.
"That’s not true," Kidman, 57, said of the viral image. "That was not me. That was from a film. That wasn’t real life. I know that image!"
The meme, featuring Kidman in a patterned top and sneakers with her arms joyfully raised, became internet legend as a supposed snapshot of her post-divorce relief.
Most recently, it resurfaced in September when Jenna Dewan shared it on Instagram following her own divorce settlement with Channing Tatum.
Kidman, however, did not specify which movie the image actually came from.
Kidman and Cruise were married from 1990 to 2001, during which they adopted two children, Isabella, now 31, and Connor, 29.
Following their split, Cruise remarried Katie Holmes in 2006 before their divorce in 2012, while Kidman found love with country star Keith Urban. She and Urban wed in 2006 and share two daughters, Sunday, 16, and Faith, 13.
