Al Pacino makes shocking revelation about 'The Godfather' premiere
Al Pacino earned an Oscar nomination for his role in 'The Godfather'
Al Pacino made a surprising confession about The Godfather premiere in his new memoir, Sonny Boy.
The legendary actor revealed that he left the 1972 premiere of his iconic film and didn’t watch it in full until its 50th screening recently.
In the memoir, Pacino, 84, recalled settling into his seat with his co-stars after a press Q&A session, saying, "I didn’t want to see the finished product. As soon as the lights went out, I went out."
He explained that he felt shy and embarrassed about seeing himself on the big screen with hundreds of others watching him.
"It was a bit disconcerting and made me shy, almost embarrassed," the Academy Award winner wrote. "As a younger actor, I guess I needed attention and didn’t want it at the same time."
What makes his confession even more intriguing is that he nearly went his entire life without watching himself in the critically acclaimed film.
"I don’t know why. Maybe I felt that because I was in it, I wouldn’t be a good audience for it," however, Pacino admitted catching a glimpse of it "here or there on TV, and once you start watching, it’s hard to turn it off."
The Scent of a Woman actor finally watched The Godfather at a special 50th-anniversary screening at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
Despite earning an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Michael Corleone, Pacino had his reasons for not watching the complete work until recently.
