Labor Day 2024: History, origin, significance
Labor Day is being celebrated today across world
Labor Day is observed on May 1 but it has a long history and origin which many people are not aware about.
To support the workers in commemoration of the Haymarket Riot that took place on May 4, 1886, in Chicago, Illinois; an international federation of socialist groups and trade unions designated May 1 in 1889, according to CNBC.
After five years, US President Grover Cleveland signed legislation to make Labor Day official.
On the first Monday in September, the day was already being celebrated in some states.
According to the US Department of Labor: “The holiday is rooted in the late nineteenth century when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognise the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being.”
It serves as a reminder of the prominent role played by the working class in nation-building.
To raise awareness of the rights of working class people and to protect them from exploitation, the day is observed worldwide every year. Aimed at improving laborers' working conditions, it is also intended to motivate initiatives.
