WhatsApp: You can soon use 'username exchange' feature without phone number sharing
WhatsApp's new feature will improve security, foster more private communication without requiring disclosure of any personal information
WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new feature that would enable users to control their privacy more fully when utilising the web interface as they will no longer need to give others their phone numbers in order to communicate on the instant messaging app.
According to reports, the company is working on a feature that will let users look up other people on the network using just their usernames. There have already been rumours that the chat app is developing the feature for Android users.
As per a tip by WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, the company is developing a feature for its web clients that will enable users to search for one other's usernames on the network and connect with them.
Currently, in order to communicate on WhatsApp, users have to exchange phone numbers. However, this function will allow users to interact with individuals without having to give their phone number to someone they do not want to share it with.
It is anticipated that WhatsApp's username-based search feature will improve security and foster more private communication without requiring the disclosure of any personal information.
According to a screenshot of the work-in-progress feature included in the post, users will be able to connect with anyone by looking up their username, phone number, or name once it becomes accessible.
