King Charles-adorned first batch of coins in historic minting event unveiled
King Charles limiited edition coins set to release in December
First Canadian coins featuring King Charles on his 75th birthday are revealed by Winnipeg.
In a historic shift from the 70-year reign of Queen Elizabeth II on Canadian coins, the Royal Canadian Mint inaugurated a new era.
Marie Lemay, the mint's President and CEO, declared, 'Since 1953, Queen Elizabeth has graced our coins, and today, on King Charles's 75th birthday, a fresh chapter in Canadian history unfolds.'
During the news conference at the Royal Canadian Mint plant, Lemay added,"We wish His Majesty a joyous birthday and eagerly anticipate sending him his personalized set of first strike coins."
The spotlight is now on the majestic portrait by Canadian artist Steven Rosati, selected from a pool of 350 submissions and awaiting Buckingham Palace's nod for final approval.
Steven Rosati, the creative mind behind King Charles III's effigy on the latest Canadian coins, expressed his honor and humility during the grand unveiling.
"I am honoured and humbled to have had my design for such a prestigious moment in the history of Canadian coins," Rosati declared, excitement palpable.
The federal government instructed the Royal Canadian Mint and the Bank of Canada to replace Queen Elizabeth's image with King Charles III on coins and the $20 bill.
Rebecca Spence, spokesperson for the Bank of Canada, revealed that the bill's design process has commenced, although it may be years before it graces our wallets.
"At this stage, it is far too early to be more precise," Spence remarked. Meanwhile, the current $20 note will maintain its circulation for years to come.
The regal transformation made its debut as the monarch's effigy was pressed onto the loonie for the first time at the mint on this historic Tuesday.
