Update: Reportedly, less than an hour after the sites went down, the problem was fixed and the sites went back up.
#FacebookisBack proclaimed the latest hashtag that was actively retweeted.
Facebook as well as Instagram appeared to be down early Tuesday around the world, both desktop and mobile sites affected, with the social media sites saying they are working on fixing the issue.
"Sorry, something went wrong. We´re working on it and we´ll get it fixed as soon as we can," Facebook said on its website.
The reasons for the outage aren't clear at this point, though Instagram, the image sharing platform owned by Facebook, later also acknowledged the problem tweeting, "We're aware of an outage affecting Instagram and are working on a fix. Thank you for your patience."
Facebook, launched on February 4, 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, now has 864 million daily active users, according to information from Facebook newsroom, September 2014. It also has about 1.35 billion monthly active subscribers.
Instagram, an online photo-sharing, video-sharing and social networking service, was launched October 6, 2010, and since then it has garnered more than 150 million monthly active users.
