Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad has hailed the establishment of the Confucius Institute at the University of Karachi, saying it would be prove invaluable for the promotion of Chinese language in Pakistan.
At a special convocation held at the Governor House on Wednesday, he awarded an honorary doctorate degree (Honoris Causa) to Sichuan Normal University Changu’s President Dr Zhou Jieming.
Ebad congratulated Dr Zhou over the conferment of the degree for disseminating the Chinese language not only in Pakistan but across the world.
He viewed that the Confucius Institute will prove a land mark in Pak-China relations.
KU Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Qaiser Ahmed and Dr. Zhou also spoke at the occasion. —APP

Teaching Chinese
The provincial education department signed a memorandum of understanding with the education department of China’s Sichaun province on Tuesday for mutual cooperation and teaching Chinese in Sindh’s schools.
The signing ceremony was held at the Sindh Assembly’s committee room and signed by education secretary Fazalullah Pechucho and the Education Department of China Vice Director General Liu Dong.
Provincial education minister Nisar Ahmed Khuhro and Chinese consul general Mayaou were also present on the occasion.
According to the pact, Chinese will be taught as a compulsory subject from class VI in all schools within three years. Students learning Chinese will gain extra marks, scholarships and opportunities to visit China.
Khuhro said making Chinese a compulsory subject was aimed at promoting the language in the country because China and Pakistan had a long history of cultural and economic relations
He added that teachers, scholars, administration and other staff would be trained for teaching Chinese on an exchange basis and they would also be awarded with scholarships so that they could learn Chinese from educational institutions in China. “Afterwards these people will act as master trainers to teach the language in the province.”
To fulfill the goals of the memorandum, additional education secretary Rehan Balouch and the director of the education department of China’s Sichuan province will coordinate and manage joint activities and forward proposals.
The agreement will remain in force for three years.
The minister said Chinese language a cultural centre of would be set up in Karachi to monitor the project.
