KARACHI: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) is investigating the matters of alleged corruption of billions of rupees in Sindh Police, The News has learnt.
According to the official record of the NAB Sindh, the Bureau is investigating the matters of alleged corruption and receiving of heavy amounts as kickbacks in the purchase of armoured vehicles and armouring of police vans, video surveillance system for all districts of Sindh including Karachi, multi-cop and sky-cam system, Toyota Hilux (police mobiles), repairs and reconditions of APC and their up-gradation from level B6 to B7, renovation and maintenance of police buildings as police stations, police lines and barracks throughout province, purchase of uniforms and protective cloths, provision and supply of fuel and contract of food served to policemen.
In this regard, the NAB Sindh has asked Accountant General (AG) Sindh to provide complete record of expenditure incurred by Sindh Police department in all districts of Sindh province regarding the described subjects.
The NAB in an official confidential letter, a copy of which is available with The News, asked the Accountant General Sindh Office that inquiry of supply of armoured vehicles and armouring of police vans, video surveillance system for all districts of Sindh, multi-cop and sky-cam system, purchases of police mobiles, repair and recondition of APC and their up-gradation, repair, renovation and maintenance of police stations, police lines and barracks, purchase of uniforms and protective cloths, supply of fuel and contract of food served to policemen is under process in the NAB Sindh and in this regard all relevant record of purchases and payments of all district account offices should be provided to the Bureau.
The NAB further requested to nominate an expert officer of AG Sindh Office who should be well conversant with accounts and audit procedure in the subject inquiry.
AG Sindh Ahsan Ahmed Kehar confirmed the move and told The News that the NAB’s directions have been received and forwarded to all district accounts offices of the province and the required record will be provided to the Bureau.
This reporter contacted media coordinator of Sindh Police, SSP Erum Awan for official version of the Police Department. She did not answer the queries till the filling of this story.
On the other hand, Public Relations Officer of NAB Sindh Qudsia Kadri and spokesman NAB Nawazish Ali Asim also avoided responding despite repeated calls and text messages by this correspondent. It is pertinent to mention here that the Sindh Police is getting budget of nearly Rs20 billion.
