During a visit to the Gujjar Nullah on Sunday, the administrator of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) termed the ongoing clean-up operation a 'people friendly project'.
Speaking to media representatives, Sajjad Hussain Abbasi said cooperation of citizens in this project would bring positive results for the metropolis. The KMC has initiated an anti-encroachment operation near the nullah and, so far, a two-kilometre stretch has been cleared out of a total of 12 kilometres as channelisation work remains underway.
Abbasi said the previous administrator, KMC, Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui, has already approved the resolution on cancellation of leases issued on drains, hence the resolution was now being implemented.“The city problems could not be solved without clearing the encroachments which had almost blocked the passage of major drains and thus causing acute issues for the citizens especially during rainy season,” he sai
He reiterated the provincial government has desired to restore all drains in Karachi to their original plan for which planning was underway after conducting technical and social surveys of these areas.
Abbasi said though the shortage of funds was an issue at hand but as the Sindh government was taking special interest in addressing civic problems of the city. He hoped that there would be increase in development funds for the KMC.
The administrator informed efforts were also being taken in the KMC to raise recovery and achieve the revenue targets, in this connection weekly meetings were being called to review and monitor the performance of recovery departments.
