The Additional IG Karachi Ghulam Qadir Thebo on Tuesday wrote to the Sindh government, asking the officials to designate specific locations for holding public gatherings.
In his letter he asserted that rallies and protests by political or religious parties had become a matter of routine despite the security risks. He said the gatherings were often held without informing the authorities concerned and were also a security risk for the public.
He said in lieu of the prevailing security threats, the law-enforcement agencies had to scramble at the last minute to adopt the required security measures to avert any threat of attack or any untoward incident risking the lives of public.
He said that in this regard, he had held meetings with the zonal DIGs and SSPs and it was decided after due deliberations that a location should be designated by
the government in each district of the Karachi Range to hold public gatherings or protests.
In this regard, he said, a letter had been forwarded to the authorities via the Sindh IGP Ghulam Hyder Jamali.
The spots proposed by the city police chief for holding public gatherings are: Jinnah Ground opposite the Quaid’s mausoleum in district East; Star Ground in district Malir; Sherpao Colony in district West; Annu Bhai Park in district Central; Jehangir Park in district South and KMC Ground in district City.
