Nasir Jamshed handed one-year ban
LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has failed to find any substantial evidence against former batsman Nasir Jamshed to get him a long term ban.
With the proof in hand, it could get him banned for a year for failing to co-operate with the PCB’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) regarding an investigation into corruption, on Monday. However, PCB legal advisor Tafazzal Rizvi made it clear that Nasir was only charged in failure to disclosure and the charges of fixing are yet to be followed.
Jamshed, who has played 48 one-day internationals for Pakistan, was suspended from all forms of cricket in February for violating the PCB’s anti-corruption code.Nasir is believed to be the prime person to have introduced a bookie with other players involving Khalid Latif and Sharjeel Khan.
Anti Corruption Tribunal announced the ban on Nasir for not cooperating with the PCB. Tafazzal said that he was charged in two counts and was found guilty in one. “Nasir has been charged with non-cooperation while the other charge obstruction to investigation is being heard,” he added.
“Anti Corruption Tribunal has imposed one year ban on cricketer Nasir Jamshed for non-co-operation with PCB ACU, more charges will be brought up in near future,” the PCB said on their official Twitter account.
The 27-year-old did not participate in the first two editions of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) but is alleged to have played a major role in the spot-fixing scandal that engulfed the Twenty20 tournament earlier this year.
“Had it been good, he or his lawyer would have come to their defence. He should have given the reason as to why his passport has been held by the British National Agency,” said Tafazzal.
He said that PCB has yet to give evidence of fixing and it was just a charge which was decided. He further said that it is a complete process of rehabilitation which will follow the end of ban. Batsmen Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif were handed five-year bans for their role in the scandal, while paceman Mohammad Irfan and all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz received respective suspensions for 12 and two months.
