Lahore to adopt initiative to improve air quality

LAHORE: The municipality of Lahore is now part of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition’s “Mitigating short-lived climate pollutants from the solid waste sector”, an important initiative of the prestigious United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The Climate & Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) is a major global initiative by United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) that unites governments, civil society and private sector, committed to improving air quality and protecting the climate in next few decades by reducing short-lived climate pollutants across the board.

The coalition acts as a catalyst to create implement and share immediate solutions addressing short-term climate change to improve people’s lives rapidly, and to ensure sustainable development for future generations.

Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) Managing Director Bilal Mustafa Syed recently attended “Mega Cities Conference in South Korea” and had an engaging and fruitful discussion with Ms Sandra M. MAZO-NIX, Coordinator - Waste Initiative, Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) Secretariat on the working and initiatives of Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC).

A senior LWMC official said the regular correspondence and communication with CCAC led to an invitation from Ms Sandra to participate in CCAC initiative of the UN. He said with climate change firmly on the international agenda, the CCAC is looking towards developing linkages between cities for better waste management practices and to protect the environment we live and work in.

“Becoming part of the CCAC underlines the impact of Lahore Waste Management Company’s new culture and concepts towards better Solid Waste Management, and we at LWMC are proud of our efforts in helping to put Lahore firmly on the world map,” said Ali Mazhar, LWMC spokesperson.
