Tribute paid to Faiz
LAHORE
Punjab University’s Pakistan Study Centre (PSC) organised a seminar on Faiz Ahmad Faiz on Friday.
Prof Carla Petievich, an expert on the Indo-Muslim cultural history from University of Texas, was the keynote speaker.
PSC Director Dr Massarrat Abid, faculty members and a large number of students were also present. Prof Petievich began her talk entitled 'Faiz and the Urdu Tradition,' by quoting T.S. Eliot’s comments on how individual genius in a poet shines brightest when he clearly carries the imprint of the tradition in which he is steeped.
Although, Faiz Ahmad Faiz is seen as a uniquely political poet and this is the basis of his great popularity, close textual readings of several poems speak from deep within the classical tradition of Urdu poetry, the speaker argued.
