Sindh approves Rs12.5bn for 20 new development projects across key sectors
KARACHI: In a significant push for provincial development, the Sindh Provincial Development Working Party (PDWP) has approved 20 new schemes amounting to Rs12.5 billion. The approval came during a high-level meeting chaired by Chairperson of the Planning and Development Board Najam Ahmed Shah.
These development projects span crucial sectors including health, irrigation, agriculture and infrastructure, with the lion’s share -- 16 projects -- falling under the works and services department. The health department secured two schemes, while the irrigation and agriculture departments received one each.
Among the key projects given the go-ahead is the construction of a medical complex along the National Highway near Razzaqabad in Bin Qasim Town, Karachi. The Rs1.43 billion facility aims to enhance healthcare access for the surrounding population.
In the irrigation sector, a pilot project for on-farm water drainage has been sanctioned with a budget of Rs330 million, aimed at improving agricultural productivity through efficient water management. Several major roadworks are also part of the approved package. These include the Rs315 million road reconditioning project from Ghotki Feeder Canal RD 17 (Waris Pull) to Mureed Shakh RD 44, and a Rs1.05 billion bypass connecting Yarodero (Waggan-Warrah Road) to the Indus Highway (N-55) via Kamber-Waggan Road, improving regional connectivity.
Another major infrastructure boost includes the Rs1.37 billion bridge at Gaddani Phatak in Sukkur, which also involves realignment and construction on Qureshi Road spanning 4.2 kilometres.
A revised scheme for cement concrete lining of the first two kilometres of the Nara Canal’s head reach has also been approved, now with an enhanced allocation of Rs4.29 billion. The upgrade is expected to reduce water seepage and support efficient irrigation.
Shah, while addressing the meeting, emphasised the importance of timely execution of these initiatives. “These schemes are not just numbers; they represent public service, regional uplift and our commitment to inclusive development,” he stated, urging all administrative departments to maintain momentum and transparency throughout the implementation phase.
