Peaceful protests have given way to violence in Pakistan, plunging the country into turmoil. The pattern is familiar by now. We get a PTI protest, which just so happens to coincide with the visit of a foreign delegation, the government responds by blocking roads and, ultimately, it is the ordinary citizens who suffer most. These violent protests are not only destabilising the country’s foundations but also rendering any potential political gains obsolete, as the damage caused by such extreme disruptions ultimately outweighs any short-term benefits.
