Macron slams Trump: ‘Neither elegant nor up to standard’ over mockery
French leaders rally behind Macron after Trump’s comments
French President Emmanuel Macron has sharply criticised US President Donald Trump after he mocked Macron over a viral video in which his wife appeared to push him during a public appearance in Vietnam last May.
Speaking on Thursday, Macron described Trump’s comments about his marriage as “neither elegant nor up to standard", signalling growing frustration amid tensions between the US and NATO allies over geopolitical issues.
Trump had referenced the incident during an Easter lunch at the White House, joking about Macron being “slapped by his wife” and imitating his response with a mock French accent.
The remarks drew immediate criticism in France, with politicians across the spectrum condemning the personal attack. France’s lower house of parliament president Yael Braun-Pivet said Trump’s mockery was inappropriate given the serious international situation.
Manuel Bompard of the hard-left France Unbowed party also defended Macron, calling the comments absolutely unacceptable.
The incident comes at a time when NATO members are being pressured by Washington regarding their joint responsibility in providing security in strategic locations.
Macron reiterated France’s stance against unilateral military actions, emphasising the need for realistic approaches in order to avoid increasing the risk in the ongoing geopolitical issues.
The comments made by Trump were not limited to Germany but also included other members, like the UK, which has resulted in a widening rift in the relationship between the two sides.
Macron reiterated France’s stance in pursuing its own path despite the pressure from Washington regarding various global hotspots.
