Germany Shooting: 5 adults killed at Stade Youth Centre, suspects detained
Police arrested two suspects after a shooting that killed five and left several injured; the motive remains under investigation
Five people were shot and killed in a town in northern Germany on Monday. Police said they had detained two individuals, including the suspected shooter.
The shooting occurred on Monday at a youth welfare facility on Dankersstrabe in Stade- a town of nearly 50,000 people to the west of Hamburg.
The Youth facility center reportedly provides accommodation and support for vulnerable young mothers, pregnant women and young children.
“Homicides involving multiple victims occurred at a youth welfare facility,” police said. “Five people were fatally injured and additional individuals sustained injuries.”
Police in Stade said a major operation was being conducted on Dankersstrabe, a street south of the city centre.
Officials said the motive for the incident in Stade, close to the port city of Hamburg, was not immediately clear.
People were urged to avoid the area and follow the instructions of the emergency services.
A police spokesperson told Reuters that no other suspects were present at large and the role of the second individual in custody also remains unclear.
The officials did not disclose the exact age group but informed that all dead were adults.
After the incident, police warned residents to steer clear of the area.
A number of people were also injured in the shooting but police said there is no further threat to the public.
Officials informed there is no ongoing danger to the public after this recent incident but the investigation is continued.
Authorities said such kind of incidents are unexpected as mass shootings are relatively rare in Germany, especially when compared to countries but it has seen a spate of high-profile cases.
In 2023, a gunman in Hamburg shot six people before killing himself at a Jehovah's Witness worship hall.
Prior to that in 2016, an 18 years old German-Iranian man who was obsessed with mass killings killed at least nine people in Munich.
Officials believe the graph is still low as compared to other such criminal acts across the globe.
