KERALA: A family in Indian city of Kerala starved their daughter-in-law to death for not bringing along sufficed dowry when she married into the family.

As per reports by Indian media, the woman identified as 27-year-old Thushara was reduced to a mere 20 kilograms that led to her eventual death as her in-laws had refused to give her any food for not bringing any dowry.

Reports by police further revealed that she had only survived on soaked rice and sugar syrup and resembled a ‘bag of bones’.

"She looked like a bag of bones. A detailed inquiry has thrown light on the cruelty she was subjected to. Her relatives alleged that she was tortured for dowry," said a police official.

The victim’s mother revealed to the police that she had been aware of the abuse which had been going on since the past five years, but took no action against them fearing it would put her life in danger.

She added further that the woman was not even allowed to meet her family since the past one year.

The couple had gotten married in 2013 and had two children. At the time of marriage, the deceased woman had brought with her some gold ornaments and money and had promised to bring in more.
