Steven Spielberg opposes Netflix films for reaching Oscars
He reasonified that the directors will be drawn to streaming service like Netflix because it could be relatively easier to win awards and would demean the efforts that are put for an Oscar otherwise.
LOS ANGELES: Hollywood filmmaker Steven Spielberg has opposed the drift of encouraging the streaming films at the Oscars, adding that such projects rather deserve an Emmy.
He reasonified that the directors will be drawn to streaming service like Netflix because it could be relatively easier to win awards and would demean the efforts that are put for an Oscar otherwise.
“One you commit to a television format, you’re a TV movie,” he added indicating that a really good Netflix movie could “deserve an Emmy, but not an Oscar”
“Fewer and fewer filmmakers are going to struggle to raise money, or to compete at Sundance and possibly get one of the specialty labels to release their films theatrically,” said the three-times Oscar-winning director.
“I don’t believe that films that are just given token qualifications, in a couple of theaters for less than a week, should qualify for the Academy Award nominations,” the director said in an interview promoting his latest film ‘Ready Player One’.
