Atlantic hurricane season sets record for latest start without a hurricane since 1966: Here’s why

In a latest update, the Atlantic hurricane season has reportedly gone a record 103 days without a hurricane, indicating an unprecedented calm in the tropics.

According to reports, since the satellite era began in 1966 the latest date that the first hurricane formed in the Atlantic hurricane season was September 11. Hurricane Gustav was primarily formed on Sept. 11, 2002 and Humberto developed on Sept. 11, 2013.

September is considered the peak of the hurricane season but no storms are forecast in the foreseeable future. In this connection, a hurricane expert with Colorado State University, Phil Klotzbach said this hurricane season has been the most dormant since 1950.

Notably, there have been only five tropical storms this season such as Arthur, Bertha, Cristoba, Dolly and Edouard. Tropical Storm Edouard only made a run at becoming a hurricane with 14 mph of strength when it made landfall near the Texas-Louisiana border. 

The US managed to avoid a hurricane making landfall last year and if this season continues in the same manner it could automatically mark a record-breaking two-year downturn.

Nonetheless, experts said that there are chances of late-season storms to develop closer to the US in areas affected by El Nino’s wind as hurricanes can find a window of opportunity to develop even during the most sluggish period.
