Remember Tupac Shakur? His case was invoked in Trinidad & Tobago PM murder probe but why?
The Trinidad and Tobago Home Minister made the reference to Tupac Shakur
Tupac Shakur was killed on the fateful night of September 7, 1996. Decades passed, and it was not legally established who was behind his killing on the streets of Las Vegas.
Until 2023, Duane "Keefe D" Davis was not even charged.
But this month, he was ruled guilty in the rap legend's killing.
These three decades of wait have been referenced in the miles-away case of Kamla Persad-Bissessar.
She is the prime minister of Trinidad and Tobago and faced an alleged assassination plot.
Star Sabga, her niece Genevieve Hadeed, and her niece's husband, Dominic Hadeed arrested as part of the investigation.
But despite having Preventive Detention Order powers — issued by the government — meaning a charge won't be necessary to arrest them.
Yet, the three accused were released.
Here, Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander referenced Shakur and his long-running case,
“Let me draw reference to what you’re talking about there. You remember Tupac Shakur? He said outside Parliament in Port of Spain to the reporters.
"Tupac Shakur was shot in 1996, and the person was only charged this year. That’s how investigations go. It’s not over till it’s over,” he said.
However, it is worth noting that Alexander himself revoked Genevieve Hadeed's and Dominic Hadeed's Preventive Detention Orders after the Constitution Review Tribunal's recommendation and considering the medical and legal situation.
While High Court Justice Vigel Paul placed Sabga on house arrest after prison on the grounds of lack of evidence, the Homeland Security Minister also revoked her PDO, setting her free.
But the minister's remarks highlight that the case is far from over despite the release.
