France seeks major FIFA changes after withdrawing support for Infantino
France has become the latest country to withdraw support for FIFA president Gianni Infantino
France’s football leaders have outlined plans to reform Fifa’s governance after the country's national association became the latest to withdraw support for Gianni Infantino’s presidency.
The recent decision comes as the French Football Federation joins England, Italy, the Republic of Ireland and Scotland in withdrawing support for Infantino over his controversial plan for Fifa competitions.
European football’s governing body Uefa seeks to boycott Fifa competitions. The Asian Football Confederation and North American governing body Concacaf have called for Infantino to resign, though he retains the support of South America’s Conmebol and the African governing body CAF.
In this connection, FFF president Philippe Diallo said in a statement: “ A project with such a significant impact on the future of football could not be envisaged without comprehensive information, in-depth consultation and a fully transparent decision-making process.”
The FFF has committed to initiating talks with the confederations, national associations, supporters and governance experts to improve Fifa.
“The aim of these consultations will be to foster collective reflection and to draw up proposals for a far-reaching transformation of Fifa's governance, with a view to restoring confidence, enhancing transparency and ensuring the independence and exemplary conduct of world football's governing body,” the FFF continued.
