Virginia State University shooting: Multiple people shot, campus on lockdown

Virginia State University has been rocked with a mass shooting that left several people wounded and the campus on lockdown.

The incident occurred on Saturday morning at approximately 1:30 am near the Quad Annexes on the Chesterfield County campus of the university.

Several gunmen are believed to have opened fire, according to the Chesterfield County Police Department and local reports from WTVR. Multiple individuals sustained gunshot wounds, though none of the injuries appear to be life-threatening.

Virginia State University is a public HBCU just south of the Virginia state capital of Richmond. The fall 2026 semester is scheduled to begin on Monday, August 17.

“The campus community should continue to avoid the area and follow all law enforcement instructions,” VSU said in a statement.

According to university officials, the shooting involved "multiple suspects" near the Quad Annexes. The investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made. No additional information related to the shooting has been released yet.
