Ceuta border crisis: 60,000 cross into Spanish territory; at least 18 died after border breach

At least 60,000 migrants have reportedly entered into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco during the border crisis, prompting Spain to deploy military forces to secure the border.

This massive surge has triggered a severe humanitarian crisis while leaving emergency services inundated. According to Ceuta’s president, 60,000 migrants have entered Ceuta from Morocco during the border crisis making the Ceuta's situation absolutely unsustainable.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez denounced the border violation on Friday in Ceuta, outlining the events as a violation of Spain’s territorial integrity. He accused human smugglers of deceiving many young people, warning that their actions prove fatal for many of them whether at sea or at Spain’s border in the autonomous city of Ceuta.

People died in border chaos

Among the 18 who died, many drowned but some were also killed in a stampede to cross the breakwater fence at Tarajal Beach. The waters near the border fence on Friday were littered with buoys, shoes and other belongings left behind.

Given the gravity of the situation, Morocco’s ambassador to Spain conveyed optimism that those who crossed from Morocco into the Spanish enclave would return. Karima Benyaich outlined the situation in Ceuta as difficult; setting it had unfolded against Morocco's wishes.

“We have always prioritized legal, orderly and safe migration for all.”

Sanchez has resisted the anti-migration trend and has gained ground across Europe and in the US. The Trump administration and other European countries have heavily guarded their borders and stepped-up deportations. This year, Spain made a significant move to give residency, and work permits to hundreds of thousands of migrants already living in the country without permission.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said France would also tighten immigration enforcement with Spain writing on X, “This crisis in Ceuta has nothing to do with the regularization of migrants adopted by the Government of Spain, as is being falsely claimed by some.”

Ceuta authorities had warned of an approaching peril

The head of Ceuta’s regional government, Juan Jesus Vivas had warned this week that migrant reception centers were inundated as arrivals by sea had been steadily increasing before the chaos erupted Thursday.

At present, Spain’s Interior Ministry has not confirmed the number of migrants who have made it to Ceuta but asserted that it would publish its next migration report on Monday.

Furthermore, a member of Spain’s Civil guard who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release figures to the media that an estimated 49,000 people had crossed which is more than half of Ceuta’s nearly 84,000 population.
