Inside: Magnitude 5.5 earthquake that's jolted Sichuan, China
A shallow 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck Sichuan's Gaoxian County, prompting an emergency response as officials assess damage and casualties, reports Xinhua
A 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck China on Monday with several aftershocks waves tearing through the region.
As reported by Xinhua, China Earthquake Administration (CEA) has initiated a level-III emergency response after an earthquake jolted County, Yibin City and southwest China's Sichuan Province.
According to the disaster monitoring network the epicenter of the earthquake was monitored at a depth of 6 km.
As per the German Research Centre for Geosciences GFZ the seismic activity occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres.
The earthquake tremors or shockwaves were felt more to residents living at the mountainous region as the quake struck at a shallow depth.
Those living in high-rise apartments in Chengdu the provincial capital felt heavy shockwaves tearing through the buildings.
Rescue teams and emergency crews are currently monitoring the affected sites while assessing potential structural damage.
No major casualties have been reported yet.
Why China is facing frequent earthquakes:
China frequently encounters moderate to severe earthquakes due to ongoing tectonic movements. Sichuan province majorly sits along the edge of the Tibetan Plateau, making it one of China’s most seismically active zones.
Previously a 5.2 magnitude earthquake jolted China in May 2026 causing major destruction after two killed and several buildings collapsed.
The earthquake caused major destruction, leading to the collapse of 13 buildings, two deaths, four injuries, and the emergency evacuation of over 7000 residents.
Additionally, another magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck Qingha province China, on June 16 that resulted in 1 death.
