Doctor Who may not return to screens for several years, according to industry insiders.

The future of the long-running sci-fi series remains uncertain after the BBC confirmed that the planned 2026 Christmas special has been cancelled and the show is entering a new phase.

New reports have also cited sources close to the production, who believe the series may not return until 2028 at the earliest, per Deadline, while one producer suggested fans could face a wait of up to five years before a new season arrives. The BBC has not confirmed any return date.

The broadcaster recently announced that the show will be put out to competitive tender as it looks for a new production partner. It said the move is aimed at securing the programme's long-term future.

In a statement, the BBC acknowledged that fans would be disappointed by the cancellation of the Christmas special but said the decision would allow greater focus on the show's future.

Despite concerns about the delay, former showrunner Steven Moffat expressed confidence that the series will return.

Speaking to Radio Times, he said, “The Doctor always survives.”

The BBC has stressed that Doctor Who remains an important part of its programming and said audiences will continue to enjoy the franchise for years to come.

While the future of the main series is being planned, a new Doctor Who animated show for children is still in production.
