FIFA's unlikely four-legged defender saving World Cup pitch

As FIFA buzz is at a fever pitch in Canada, one of the tournament's hosts, they have set up a training pitch in Toronto's Centennial Park.

However, there, they face a problem: pesky Canadian geese and their droppings on the ground.

Officials fear the flock of geese may descend on the freshly prepared pitch and eat the grass, leaving patches of deposits.

So, for this, the local administration has come up with a plan.

They hired Border Control Birds and Dogs, a company that keeps unwanted birds at bay at key spots.

The firm, in turn, put two Border Collies, Sally and Ben, on duty to haze the geese rather chasing them.

Gareth Williams, the company's head, explains this concept.

“The dogs crouch down and stalk the geese, as they would traditionally for sheep and moving livestock."

“Geese then start thinking the border collies are predators in that area, and it encourages them to leave," he told CTV News Toronto.

At the moment, Sally and Ben go to pitch twice in a day for at least thirty minutes.

Meanwhile, the Canadian team is currently practicing in Centennial Park for their match on June 12.
