Ryan Reynolds recalls near-fatal accident that changed his life at 18
The actor admitted he's been a 'broken mess' since the crash
Ryan Reynolds is looking back at a serious accident he survived during his late teens.
In a recent video published by GQ on June 9, the 49-year-old actor said that he spent four weeks in hospital in the 1990s after being hit by a drunk driver.
“When I was 18, I left a bar and I'd had a beer. I walked back and I looked at my car for a second. I thought, ‘You know what, I'm not going to drive anywhere. Even if it's four blocks home, absolutely not,'" Reynolds told his Welcome to Wrexham co-star Rob Mac.
Despite making a responsible choice of not driving while drunk, the situation turned into a dangerous one of the horrible events of his life.
“Instead, I turned around, started to cross the street,” he recalled, “and I was run over by a drunk driver.”
Reynolds shared that the crash left him with severe injuries.
“As a result of the accident," Reynolds noted he "broke every bone in his left side."
“He hit me so hard, his car was not operational.”
The Deadpool actor previously talked about the incident in an interview with CTV News in 2011, per New York Daily News.
He revealed at the time that he woke several days after the accident.
“I woke up three days later,” Reynolds said, recalling his father sitting beside him holding a vomiting tray.
“I guess I had been heaving in my unconscious,” he continued. “And nothing says love like painting someone with three-day-old Gin Rummies. Just soaked the man head to toe in my vomit.”
Reflecting on the experience, Reynolds said, “I’ve been a rickety, broken mess.”
