Paul Rudd reminisces about memorable 'Clueless' audition

Paul Rudd recently revealed that he gave auditions several times for Clueless before landing a role in it.

The 57-year-old sat down with Jane Shane for the May 28 episode of Therapuss, where he reminisced about being cast as Josh in the 1995 romantic comedy film at age 24.

Rudd told Shane that Clueless was only the “second movie that I ever did, but it was the first one that ever came out.”

Shane went on to ask him about the audition process and the Ant-Man star admitted that he learnt about the role soon after he graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.

Calling to mind, Rudd shared, “I had gotten an agent and I'd read some scripts that were, you know, they'd send scripts. I'd try and get auditions here and there. And then this movie was getting cast.”

“They were making this movie, and there were a lot of parts for young people, kids and stuff. So, I read the script and I liked it. I thought it was smart, and I thought it was kind of interesting,” he said.

Notably, the biggest shock Rudd faced was when he went into audition for the 1995 cult classic and found out that he would secure the role if the audition went well.

“When I went in, I asked if I could audition for a bunch of the roles. I auditioned for Christian. I wanted to audition for Murray, but I didn't realize that he was African-American. Elton, which was [Jeremy] Sisto's part. And then they said, 'Well, would you read for Josh?’” the Death of a Unicorn star explained.

It is pertinent to mention that Clueless was about Cher (played by Alicia Silverstone), a “shallow, rich and socially successful’ girl who “is at the top of her Beverly Hills high school's pecking scale. Seeing herself as a matchmaker, Cher first coaxes two teachers into dating each other.”

It also starred Brittany Murphy, Donald Faison, Stacey Dash, Justin Walker, Breckin Meyer, Wallace Shawn, and others.
