'Coronation Street' and 'Emmerdale' schedule temporarily changed: See updated schedule
ITV confirms more schedule changes for 'Coronation Street' and 'Emmerdale'
ITV soaps Coronation Street and Emmerdale are set for more schedule changes next month as live football coverage takes over primetime television.
The broadcaster has confirmed that both programmes will be moved from their usual times to make room for England’s Women’s World Cup qualifying matches. Some episodes will air on different days, while others will be removed from the schedule completely.
The changes come only a few months after ITV introduced a new format for its soaps. Earlier this year, the broadcaster reduced the number of weekly episodes and switched to five 30-minute instalments each week. ITV said the move would make it easier for viewers to follow the storylines and fit the shows into their schedules.
ITV Managing Director of Media and Entertainment, Kevin Lygo, previously said the shorter episodes would create faster storytelling and suit modern viewing habits, especially for streaming audiences.
Despite those plans, viewers are now facing another period of disruption because of ITV’s sports coverage.
On Friday, June 5, both soaps will not air at all as ITV broadcasts England’s Women’s World Cup qualifier against Spain. Instead, viewers will get a special one-hour soap block on Sunday, June 7, between 8pm and 9pm.
Further changes will follow the next week. On Tuesday, June 9, Coronation Street and Emmerdale will once again be removed from the schedule due to England’s Women’s European qualifier against Ukraine.
The soaps will return on Wednesday, June 10, but at earlier times than usual. Emmerdale will air at 7pm, followed by Coronation Street at 7.30pm.
There will also be no episodes on Thursday, June 11, because ITV will be showing coverage of the tournament’s opening ceremony.
The biggest change comes on Friday, June 12, when ITV briefly brings back the old hour-long format. Emmerdale will air at 8pm, followed by Coronation Street at 9pm.
Both soaps usually air on ITV1 during the week and are also available to stream on ITVX from 7am on the day of broadcast.
