Flower Moon meets Blue Moon: May 2026 to feature rare lunar spectacle–When & where to watch
Year 2026 will host 13 full moons instead of 12 with arrival of Blue Moon
May 2026 is full of surprises for sky watchers. The upcoming month will grace the sky with a rarely happened lunar spectacle, featuring two full moons.
In this spectacular celestial activity, the Flower Moon will coincide with the Blue Moon in a single month.
The first full moon, known as Flower Moon will be visible on May 1, 2026. The name reflects the spring blooms across North America. Talking about the peak illumination, one can see the moon in its full grace at 1:24 p.m. EDT on Friday.
But, sky watchers can see the full moon night before and night after, but the best time to watch Flower Moon will be at moonrise during dusk on Friday, especially when it appears on the eastern horizon shortly after sunset.
If you want to watch the Flower Moon at its most illuminating situation, just go to open countryside and find an elevated location, offering a clear view of the eastern horizon.
Unlike the supermoon, the Flower Moon is a micromoon and it will appear slightly smaller than usual due to the larger distance from Earth in its orbit.
Here comes the second full moon, unfolding at the end of May. The Blue Moon will arrive on May 31, but the night to watch the moonrise will be on May 30. The Blue Moon will also rise after sunset across Europe and North America.
The peak visibility will be at 4:45 a.m. EDT but the moon can best be viewed early in the morning on May 31 and the night of May 30.
Hence with the arrival of Blue Moon, the year 2026 will host 13 full moons instead of typical 12.
