Chappell Roan walks back Brigitte Bardot tribute after backlash
Chappell Roan clarifies her recent tribute to actress Brigitte Bardot, who died on December 28, 2025
Chappell Roan has changed her stance after honouring late French film icon Brigitte Bardot and then learning about her controversial remarks.
For those unversed, Roan had posted a tribute via Instagram Story, calling Bardot “my inspiration for Red Wine Supernova” in the wake of Bardot's death on December 28, 2025.
“Rest in peace Ms. Bardot,” Roan concluded before seemingly drawing criticism over the tribute as she released a clarification shortly after on late Monday.
Reflecting on Bardot’s later-life controversies in a follow-up Instagram Story post, the Grammy-winning singer pointed out that she had not known about Bardot’s problematic history.
"Holy s*** I did not know all that insane s*** Ms. Bardot stood for.”
Roan further stressed that she did not condone those views, calling the revelations “very disappointing to learn.”
Bardot was celebrated for her groundbreaking career in 1950s–60s cinema and later animal rights activism, but was also widely criticised for repeatedly making racist and anti-immigrant remarks.
French courts also fined her multiple times for inciting racial hatred. She also made disparaging comments about the #MeToo movement and LGBTQ+ issues.
