Wiz Khalifa sentenced to nine months in Romanian jail
Prosecutors appealed for a tougher sentence, which the appeals court approved
Wiz Khalifa has been sentenced to nine months in prison in Romania over a drug possession conviction tied to his arrest last year.
The ruling was handed down on Thursday by the Constanța Court of Appeal, more than a year after the rapper was detained while performing in the country.
The 38-year-old artist, whose real name is Cameron Jibril Thomaz, was headlining the Beach, Please! festival in Costinești in July 2024, when authorities alleged he possessed more than 18 grams of cannabis and consumed some of it on stage.
According to the Associated Press, the court found Khalifa guilty of possessing “dangerous drugs, without right, for personal consumption.”
The decision is final and follows an earlier April 2025 ruling that fined him 3,600 lei, about $830. Prosecutors appealed for a tougher sentence, which the appeals court approved.
In their written ruling, judges said the sentence was meant to send a message, calling Khalifa’s actions “showy” and socially harmful. They added that his behaviour could encourage illegal drug use, especially among young people.
Following his arrest in 2024, Khalifa apologised on X for smoking marijuana on stage, saying he meant no disrespect to Romania.
As a US citizen who does not reside in the country, it remains unclear whether Romanian authorities will pursue extradition.
