Streaming giant Twitch is to be included in under 16s social media blacklist
A popular streaming site is set to be included on the social media ban list
The popular streaming site Twitch has been officially added to the social media ban list that is part of new Australia law, which comes into effect on December 10.
Twitch is a platform which is commonly used for posting content, which enables users, including Australian children, to interact with others online in relation to the content.
However, the laws include an exclusion for platforms that have the prime purpose of gaming.
According to the eSafety commissioner, Twitch’s streaming features meant it was specifically designed to encourage user interaction.
A statement has been posted to the eSafety website, “Twitch is a platform most commonly used for live streaming or posting content that enables users, including Australian content, to interact with others in relation to the content posted.”
The new rule requires all users to be at least 13 years old and for minors to be supervised by a parent or guardian.
Social media companies have to take prudent measures to get children and teenagers off their platforms and will face fines of up to almost $ 50 million.
The recent development was made to mitigate the risks of online social interaction, marking a significant shift for the streaming and gaming industries.
In addition, Meta revealed that it would start notifying users in the two weeks before ban officially begins.
