UFC 322: Makhachev to face Maddalena in welterweight title showdown
Maddalena promises to send Makhachev ‘back to 155’ in title clash
Russian born Islam Makhachev is all set to take on the welterweight champion Jake Della Maddalena for his first title fight in this weight category, after relinquishing his lightweight title belt in January this year.
The fight is scheduled for UFC 322, on Saturday, at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Makhachev, a four-time lightweight champion, moved up to the welterweight division in May and challenged the reigning champion Della Maddalena.
Talking about his decision to move up in weight division, Makhachev said that it was difficult for him to cut weight to 70kg and it was affecting his performance and recovery.
In an interview with ESPN, the Russian mixed martial arts (MMA) athlete said, “Previously, I always had to worry about my diet. Now, I can eat whatever I want and smile.”
He added that his life has changed since moving up in weight division.
In an interview with MMA Fighting, Della said that he’s hoping to send Makhachev packing back to the 155 pound weight division (lightweight), adding, “Makhachev has a respectable resume in the lightweight division.”
Makahchev’s UFC record includes 28 bouts with a record 27 wins and one loss. Della has been undefeated in 18 straight MMA fights since 2016.
