Dolphin spotted in Venice lagoon draws crowds but raises safety concerns
A dolphin has been sighted in the tourist-heavy areas of northern Italy
A dolphin named Christened Mimmo has been sighted in the tourist-heavy areas of the Venetian Lagoon for several months now.
The bottlenose dolphin, Christened Mimmo, has delighted residents and tourists with its aerobatics, crossing, and diving between gondolas and waterbuses.
Meanwhile, concerns have been arising about its potentially serious health and safety issues.
In this connection, experts have been questioning why the dolphin is alone, given that this species commonly lives in pods of numerous individuals.
Several videos have been circulating on social media showing water taxis chasing after the creature at the instruction of tourists, and there are even unplanned excursions organized to spot it.
Meanwhile, concerns have been arising about the animal’s welfare, as the creature is at risk of being struck by a propeller and seriously injuring itself.
Dolphins detect objects by sound using echolocation, which offers a sophisticated system to map their surrounding space.
Experts were of the view that the baleen whales have become disoriented and may lose contact with their pod.
Concerning the current situation, the dolphin has been recurrently entering and exiting the lagoon to and from the open sea, and is believed to have been attracted by food and movement since July.
Authorities are continuously working to direct tourists and boaters to maintain a safe distance and refrain from disturbing it while also confirming that it is eating and exhibiting normal patterns.
