Prince William unveils bold plan to protect Amazon’s 'frontline defenders'

Prince William is going from Rio’s rainforest views to real rainforest action. 

During his United for Wildlife summit in Brazil, the Prince of Wales announced a brand new initiative aimed at protecting indigenous defenders of the Amazon, the people literally putting their lives on the line to save the planet’s lungs.

“Indigenous peoples and local communities have long been protectors of the world’s most critical ecosystems,” William said, addressing delegates at the event. 

“But today, their lives are increasingly at risk, and their lands are under mounting threats. If we are serious about tackling the climate crisis and restoring nature, we must stand with those who defend it.”

The new initiative builds on his earlier “ranger support package,” expanding its reach from Africa to South America. 

The programme, launched last year at the Earthshot Prize in South Africa, provides thousands of wildlife rangers with affordable medical evacuation and in-service insurance, a literal lifeline for those working on the conservation frontlines.

Partnering with the Tusk Trust and the Game Ranger Association of Africa, the scheme already covers over 6,000 rangers across Africa. Now, with its Amazon expansion, William is taking his conservation crusade global.

The Amazon remains one of Earth’s most endangered treasures, under siege from illegal logging, mining, agriculture, and trafficking. Its defenders often indigenous activists face increasing danger for standing up to exploitation.
