Egypt opens world’s largest archaeological museum, showcasing 50,000 artifacts
Grand Egyptian Museum is set to open on Saturday after 20 years of construction
Egypt is set to open the world's largest Grand Egyptian Museum which is located next to pyramids of Giza after two-decades of construction.
The archaeological facility, worth $1 billion, spans an area of 470,000 square metres. The highly-coveted museum and hub of single civilization will showcase 50,000 artifacts.
Among the artifacts, the items will include complete treasures of King Tutankhamun’s tomb, a 3,200-year-old colossus of Ramesses II and a 4500-year-old boat belonging to Khufu, the pharaoh who is known for building the pyramids.
Designed by Dublin’s Heneghan Peng Architects, the museum is also built on Pharaonic designs, holding 24,000 square meters of permanent exhibition space, children’s museum.
The Grand Egyptian Museum also contains educational facilities, a large conservation centre, and a commercial area.
Embellished with 12 main galleries, it showcases antiquities belonging to prehistoric times and the Roman era.
According to Ahmed Ghoneim, the museum’s CEO, shed light on the use of cutting-edge technology and mixed-reality shows, demonstrating a merger of classic heritage with today’s age creativity.
“We’re using the language that Gen Z uses. Gen Z doesn’t use the labels that we read as old people and would rather use technology,” he added.
Egypt announced the construction of the complex in 1992, but its construction did not begin until 2005.
However, some areas of the museum, such as main galleries, were opened in 2024.
Now, after 20 years of construction, Egypt will open the museum on Saturday, November 1.
