Hurricane Melissa tears Jamaica into two islands
Hurricane Melissa struck the island country on Tuesday and left behind a trail of ruin
Hurricane Melissa, the most dangerous hurricane to ever hit Jamaica, has wreaked havoc across the country, with many comparing the destruction to a post-apocalyptic scene.
The hurricane has split the Caribbean island into two, with half of it under water due to heavy rain. Nearly 75 per cent of the island has been left without power.
Melissa hit the country with catastrophic force, lashing out winds and rain the entire night, also crippled communications. The exact scale of destruction is not yet known.
Several reports suggest that hospitals, homes and businesses have suffered significant damages. Prime Minister Andrew Holness declared the country a disaster area on Tuesday, October 28, 2025.
Fortunately, no deaths have been reported so far. However, the government says that “their first task in the day break will still be to check if everybody is alive.”
The PM has expressed that there might be some loss of life, adding, “Damage is widespread.”
Hurricane Melissa, with maximum sustained winds of 298km/h, struck the island country on Tuesday and left behind a trail of ruin.
An MP in the western Jamaica compared the destruction to a movie scene, stating, “It resembled the scene of an apocalypse movie.”
Due to the collapse of communication infrastructure, residents have been unable to contact their loved ones, adding to their worries.
