Watch dramatic footage: Over 100 cars swept away after flood hits Bulgaria
Severe flooding hit Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast, resulting in 4 deaths, causing massive destruction
Floods that swept away through villages in southeastern Bulgaria and on the Black Sea coast claimed four lives on October 3, 2025.
According to local authorities, nearly hundred cars have been washed away after torrents of water swept through the Black Sea resort of Elenite in south-eastern Bulgaria.
Videos shared on social media showed how torrents of muddy water washing away cars in one of the main streets in Elenite.
Moreover, hundreds of people in the region have been forced to evacuate their homes and infrastructure has been completely damaged as the southeastern Bulgaria was hit by heavy rainfall on Friday, nearly 200–250 millimeters.
Furthermore, the sudden deluge overwhelmed drainage systems and local rivers, resulting in flash floods that swept through streets, homes, and tourist accommodations.
Floods that killed four people also included two rescue workers.
“Among the victims were two rescuers, one a border police officer and the other a tractor driver,” Bulgarian Interior Minister Daniel Mitov said.
A state of emergency has been declared along part of Black Sea coast, as regional public transport was halted due to flooded roads after days of extreme rainfall and vehicles have been washed away and homes have been left without power.
Specialized teams from the Bulgarian Navy have been deployed to search for missing people and assist the evacuation efforts.
While, northwestern parts of the country were hit by severe winter weather with heavy snowfall continuing for a second day in the Balkan Range.
The flood, which occurred shortly before midday on Friday, October 3, also damaged buildings and roads.
Flood has caused widespread damages, including roads, bridges, and power infrastructure, leaving thousands without electricity.
Moreover, many homes and businesses also sustained heavy damage, while local tourism, a major economic driver for the region, faces setbacks as resorts and campsites evaluate losses.
Reginal authorities continued to assess the full extent of the damage while prioritizing the rescue of stranded residents and tourists.
Furthermore, temporary shelters have been set up food, clean water and medical aid are being provided to affected communities.
Major cause of Bulgaria flood:
Floods in Bulgaria occurs due to mountainous territories along with a dense river network making it prone to over pouring or flash flooding during heavy rainy seasons.
Moreover, the rivers such as the Struma, Danube and Marista are also responsible for the flooding patterns in the region as well as heavy rainfall, melting snow and inadequate drainage infrastructure also contribute to such flood zones.
Furthermore, it is not the first time that Bulgaria is facing such deadly floods, previously the flood in June 2014 took 16 lives causing massive destruction.
Many environmentalists had already warned for years about over-development on the Black Sea coast, arguing that it will worsen damage during natural disasters including flash floods.
Elsewhere, northwestern parts of the country were hit by severe winter weather with heavy snowfall continuing for a second day in the Balkan Range.
