Two people were killed and twelve others were injured in a chaotic shootout between rival gunmen on October 4, 2025, in a crowded downtown nightlife area of Montgomery.
The incident, which police have described as a “mass shooting,” occurred around 11:30 p.m. in the city’s capital district.
The shooting broke out on a very busy weekend in Montgomery, which was hosting the Alabama College rivalry football game. Police believe the violence began when one of the fourteen victims was targeted, leading multiple people to draw weapons and exchange gunfire in the dense crowd.
The two people who died were identified by police as 43-year-old Shalanda Williams and 17-year-old Jeremiah Morris. Five of the injured victims were hospitalised with life-threatening injuries, and seven of the fourteen victims were under the age of 20.
Authorities recovered multiple weapons and shell casings from the scene and confirmed that at least two of the victims were harmed.
As of Sunday afternoon, no arrest had been made, and police are actively reviewing surveillance video and appealing to the public for information.
James Graboys, the Montgomery Police Chief, described the nature of the violence, stating, “This was two parties involved that were basically shooting at each other in the middle of a crowd.”
He added that the shooters “did not care about the people around them when they did it.”
Steven Reed, Montgomery Mayor, condemned the violence and pledged action, saying:
“We’re gonna do whatever we can not only to arrest those responsible, we’re going to do whatever to arrest those connected in any way, who knew what may have happened, who knew what could take place.”
Mayor Reed further stated that the shooters “had no regard for human life.”
