Jane Fonda leads 500 Hollywood stars in revitalized 'Committee for First Amendment'
'The federal government is once again engaged in a coordinated campaign to silence critics in the government, the media, the judiciary, academia, and the entertainment industry,' Jane Fonda
Oscar-winning star Jane Fonda has revitalized the Free Speech Movement, joined by 500-plus Hollywood stars, after she made a plea to her Hollywood community in a letter that reads:
”I’m 87 years old. I’ve never seen war, repression, protest, and backlash. I’ve been celebrated, and I’ve been branded an enemy of the state. But I can tell you this: this is the most frightening moment of my life.”
She continued, “The federal government is once again engaged in a coordinated campaign to silence critics in the government, the media, the judiciary, academia, and the entertainment industry."
Fonda further wrote, “When I feel scared, I look to history. I wish there were a secret playbook with all the answers—but there never has been.”
She went on, “That's why I believe the time is now to relaunch the Committee for the First Amendment—the same committee my father, Henry Fonda, joined with other artists during the McCarthy era, when so many were silenced or even imprisoned simply for their words and their craft.”
The list of over 500 artists who joined the Fonda Free Speech movement includes Aaron Sorkin, Barbra Streisand, Glenn Close, Gracie Abrams, JJ Abrams, John Legend, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Whoopi Goldberg, and many more.
Netizens weigh in
Netizens hailed Jane Fonda’s decision, with comments extending support to the movement on her Instagram post, which she uploaded on October 2, 2025.
One user wrote, “You’ve inspired me my whole life, and you continue to do so! Thank you for being you—from a Canadian neighbor who’s worried about America with heart emojis. This is important-America is under siege and the call is coming from inside the house!!!”
Another user hailed the decision and commented, "Jane Fonda you've been a voice for the people since you were practically a kid. We need you and we love you."
A third user commented, “Your father would be proud. Thank you thank you. You give those of us who are disillusioned with everything going on hope that we can continue to keep going and win!”
In the past, the Committee for the First Amendment was spearheaded by her father, Henry Fonda, during the 1940s.
Jane Fonda's decision to revitalize the Free Speech Movement comes amid the suspension of ABC late-night show host Jimmy Kimmel earlier this month.
