Princess Anne steams into history for NRM’s Golden Anniversary

Princess Anne is taking the limelight for the British royals this week, celebrating a milestone in Britain’s transport history.

Princess Anne is set to visit the National Railway Museum on Leeman Road on Thursday, September 25, 2025,  as the museum marks its 50th anniversary with a special reception. 

Her visit will coincide with the unveiling of the newly renovated Station Hall, which has undergone an £11 million transformation.

The Grade-II listed Station Hall will officially reopen to the public on Friday, 26 September, just in time for the museum’s golden anniversary weekend celebrations, offering visitors a stunning blend of history and modern design.

Since opening its doors as the first national museum outside London, the National Railway Museum (NRM) has welcomed nearly 40 million visitors and played a vital role in preserving Britain’s rich railway heritage.

The museum is home to iconic locomotives such as the Mallard and the Flying Scotsman, holding the world’s largest collection of railway objects. 

It remains the most visited free attraction in the region, boasting over 260 locomotives and rolling stock, thousands of railway artifacts, and more than 1.75 million documents, photographs, and artworks in its archives.

The newly renovated Station Hall, once the goods station adjacent to York Station, historically served as a bustling depot and trade hub, where vast quantities of goods were transported to destinations across the country. 

Meanwhile, Prince Edward will be out and about at London’s Southbank Centre, enjoying a special concert.
