Sweden becomes world’s first country to be available on prescription
Sweden has launched a new campaign, and positioned itself as the world’s first travel destination that can be prescribed by doctors for its health benefits
Sweden’s official tourism board has launched an exciting new campaign called “The Swedish Prescription” as a distinctive approach to traditional treatment, positioning the country as the world’s first travel destination that can be prescribed by doctors for its health and wellness benefits.
This significant approach is primarily based on a research-based destination prescription concept that has been curated by Sweden, focusing on three intervention themes: nature, culture and social prescribing, in an effort to get more people to enjoy the best of Sweden.
A senior professor at a prominent university, Karolinska Institutet, in Sweden has deeply reviewed the health benefits of each activity.
Patients are advised to download a medical referral form to support an application with their GP.
They may then benefit from a rejuvenating experience in Sweden that can improve their health.
According to a global YouGov survey, 67 per cent of medical professionals in the UK would recommend it as a destination to improve health.
Dr Sam Everington, who is based in London, was of the view that though many patients don’t know that they can initiate the discussion with their doctors.
However, as a physician, "I would thoroughly recommend discussing how Swedish nature and lifestyle could benefit many patients' health."
He further explained, “We have made great strides in making the social prescription a more pivotal part of public health in the UK; but there is still much more to be done practically.”
