King Charles’ highland retreat shuts gates
King Charles’ Castle charm meets Christmas cheer as Balmoral decks the halls for shoppers
King Charles III’s cherished Scottish retreat, Balmoral Castle, has officially closed to the public for now.
The announcement came via Instagram on Monday, alongside a striking photo of the castle framed by golden autumn leaves.
The message confirmed that not only the castle itself, but also the grounds, gardens, and exhibitions are taking a seasonal pause.
Since inheriting the Highland estate from his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, the King has made Balmoral more accessible than ever, welcoming visitors on select dates throughout the year.
Until then, royal enthusiasts are being encouraged to stay connected by joining Balmoral’s mailing list.
In the meantime, Balmoral promises, “Stay connected and never miss a moment of the magic.”
Balmoral is set to put on its autumn finery this October 1, as the castle grounds transform into a bustling marketplace filled with charm and creativity.
From 17–19 October, visitors can immerse themselves in the Autumn Artisan Markets, hosted by Exclusively Highlands.
Stalls brimming with handcrafted treasures, gourmet delights, and unique gifts are waiting to be discovered. It’s the perfect time for visitors to shop local, soak up the seasonal atmosphere, and admire the talents of artisans from across the Highlands.
Entry to the market is completely free, with parking available on site for just £5 making it an ideal autumn day out for the whole family.
