Tropical Storm Kiko is weakening as its moves just north of the Hawaiian islets on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, bringing rain showers and rough waves, according to forecasters.

Once a Category 4 hurricane in the Pacific Ocean, Kiko shifted south and is now less than 100 miles from Hawaii. The National Hurricane Centre expected it to weaken into a tropical depression on September 10 and a remnant low by September 11.

Rainfall has substantially affected the upwind sides of Maui and the Big Island since the evening of September 9.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu said rain is anticipated to spread inland on September 10, with total generally reaching 1 to 2 inches. Some localized heavy showers may occur, but rainfall shouldn’t exceed 1 inch per hour.

Kiko’s sustained winds are about 40 mph, moving west at 13mph. The storm’s westward path is anticipated to avoid a direct hit on the islets, and its intensity should begin to lessen on September 10.

Forecasters advised that tropical humidity could cause brief showers and flash flooding, especially on upwind areas. Drought affected underbody sides may also face fire hazards due to disintegrated trade wind patterns.

High waves warning are in effect for Kauai and Oahu, although the Big Island saw lower swells and waves warning were cancelled. Swells are anticipated to peak on September 10 across western waters, and rip current may form, posing hazards to swimmers.

Resident and caller are visitors are advised to follow original rainfall cautions.
